WELCOME

The Latin America Music And Culture Kit provides easily accessible and applicable resources for music teachers, Spanish teachers, art teachers, drama teachers, social studies teachers, ESL instructors, teachers for the gifted and talented, and a few other disciplines alike. This kit has grown out of a desire to bring together information about the diversity of Latin American cultures and their connection to life in the United States. This kit is not meant to contain a comprehensive treatise on Latin America, but rather to provide teachers easy access to resources that can conveniently be incorporated into various disciplines of a school's curriculum.

Ed East & Karin Stein

Welcome to the Latin America Music And Culture Kit! This web site contains the same layout as the actual CD-Rom, but only some of the links on this sample web site are active, to protect the full contents of the CD-Rom. This site was established to give you an idea of what the CD-Rom contains.

The creation of the Latin America Music And Culture Kit was supported in part by a grant from the Iowa Arts Council.

The authors of the Culture Kit, Ed East and Karin Stein, are available for concerts and workshops nationwide. For more information about the authors, both of whom are Latin American, please visit www.callesur.com.

The Culture Kit is a multi-media, cross-platform (Mac & PC) CD-Rom containing multi-disciplinary teaching resources for levels K-12, all centered around the topic of Latin America and Hispanic cultures. The CD-Rom navigates like a web page, as illustrated here, using standard html, PDF, MP3, and MPEG files.

The CD-Rom contains:

  • Numerous recordings of songs for the general music or Spanish class; numerous recordings of compositions for choir, band, and orchestra. The musical recordings are in MP3 format (regular CDs of the music may be ordered).
  • Scores, lyrics, and phonetic pronunciation guides to all the recordings on the CD-Rom (spoken pronunciation guides may be ordered on a separate CD). Orchestral and band pieces include scores for individual instruments
  • Maps and geography games.
  • Short theater pieces.
  • Written, graphic, and video instructions on how to make and play South American panpipes.
  • Photos of Latin American crafts for use in art classes.
  • Short videos about Latin America, about how to make and play panpipes, and about the authors, Latin duo "Calle Sur." (Videos can also be ordered in DVD or VHS format.)
